Project Summary: This project was initiated by the USACE to help the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) due to damage caused by Hurricane Maria. The project involved the replacement of the operator, stem, stem guides and trash rack at the Guajataca Dam in Isabella, Puerto Rico. MDS installed a new stem, stem guides and operator that were supplied by a Quabbin Inc.
Services Included:
• Stem, stem guides and operator removal and installation required the use of a Spider scaffold in order to reach otherwise inaccessible locations above water. A custom frame with hoist attached was engineered and erected by MDS specifically for this project.
-Removal of bent 4” diameter steel stem sections in 20’ lengths, overall 80’ long both above and below water.
-Removal of existing 2,500lb operator and replacement with a new operator.
-Removal of 4 remaining stem guides both above and below water.
-Installation of 9 stainless steel stem guides with stainless hardware both above and below water.
-Installation of 3.5” diameter stainless stem section vertically in 9’ lengths weighing 350lbs each, overall 80’ long both above and below water.
• Fabrication and installation of new trash rack 6’long X 3’wide weighing 500lbs.
